4 Growing Medium/Substrate

Our light-weight growing medium or substrate is efficient at absorbing and retaining water whilst allowing excess water to drain into the drainage/retention layer.

The growing medium comprises a range of materials that absorb and distribute nutrients as well as provide anchorage for plant roots.

Good moisture retention capacity as well as aeration of plant roots is achieved using a range of carefully formulated natural and man-made materials and not typical soils.

Typical components of green roof substrate include sand, lava, pumice, gravel, approximately 10 – 20% organic matter e.g. composted bark and light expanded clay granules (LECA)
