A green roof is a roof partially or fully covered in thriving plants. In some cases they can occur spontaneously such as a roof covered in moss but in most cases they require a ‘life support system’ comprising:

  1. An adequate light weight growing medium
  2. A drainage and retention system that maintains moisture during dry periods and drains excess water during wet periods
  3. A roof structure capable of withstanding the extra weight of a saturated green roof
  4. A waterproofing system that forms a tough barrier to water and root penetration.

Our ‘extensive’ green roof systems comprise low growing plants such as sedums (stonecrops) providing dense, lush, colourful coverage that will withstand extreme climatic conditions from frost to drought and require very little maintenance.
